This will be a research intensive course where students are expected to develop their academic research skills of critical analysis and argumentation and to produce polished piece of scholarship. | The course in this semester will be an advanced survey of American Pragmatism and American philosophy of education focusing on major writings of John Dewey. We will discuss the entire works of Dewey’s philosophy of education in Democracy and Education, Experience and Education. Moving on, we will concentrate his central ideas of thinking in his How We Think. In this course we will explore and evaluate John Dewey’s philosophy of education in his writings on thinking or inquiry. After spending some time looking at Dewey’s lifetime and his major works, we will turn to an examination of his How We Think and other writings on logic. Then we will turn to more specific theme, the central ideas of Dewey’s philosophy as a general education. | Each student is required to do in-class presentation on each chapter of How We Think. While reading and in-class presentation are crucial parts of the course, the central activity in this course is live discussion. Thus attendance is considered mandatory. In this course we will explore and evaluate John Dewey’s philosophy of education in his writings on thinking or inquiry. This course is tailored to the students whose interests are in philosophical reflections on education, science, language, communication, metaphysics, ethics and values, politics, logic, etc. As a master-level course in educational sciences, it presuppose basic skills of reading and analyzing academic texts and writing at an appropriate academic level.
